Coordinator - GT Promoting Relationships, Identity, and Mentoring through Engineering

Jonathan Gaines
gaines@gatech.edu
The Woodruff School of Mechanical Engineering at Georgia Tech is recruiting a coordinator for its summer engineering mentoring program entitled GT PRIME. The deadline to apply is April 21st, 2025. The position pays $30/hour for 7.5 weeks. The total compensation will be $4,500. Employment is from May 12th to July 3rd.

Georgia Tech Promoting Relationships, Identity, and Mentoring through Engineering (GT PRIME) is a summer STEM outreach program that uses engineering problem solving within a family environment to strengthen the relevance and value of pathways to engineering. The program targets three populations concurrently: 1. Rising 7th and 8th graders, 2. Undergraduate engineering students, and 3. K-12 counselors, using a four-week curriculum for robotics and engineering design to illuminate the “human value” inherent within engineering. In this context, engineering will be defined as “the art of problem solving to help other people”. The program primarily trains a team of school counselors to facilitate an engineering outreach program with middle school youth. Nine K-12 school counselors will be trained as mentors for the outreach program which will invite middle school youth to campus as mentees for a 3-week STEM mentoring summer camp. Engineering students are used to facilitate program activities and to help school counselors with the technical aspects of the curriculum.

The coordinator is in charge of the day-to-day operations of the outreach program, implementation of program activities, and management of a team of assistant coordinators to assist with program execution. The position requires approximately 5 hours of work each day with primary responsibilities Monday - Thursday from 9:00am - noon and from 1:00pm - 3:00pm over the duration of the program. The first 2.5 weeks of employment will focus on training and planning in collaboration with Dr. Gaines (program creator and founder) so program onboarding can be achieved. The coordinator will then lead a one-week training with all assistant coordinators. This is followed by the three-week outreach program portion where the coordinator and assistant coordinators will be responsible for facilitation of program activities and overarching leadership of the STEM mentoring program. K-12 school counselors will interface directly with the youth with a ratio of 2-3 middle school youth per school counselor during the outreach portion. As such, the coordinator will help to empower both school counselors and youth to complete the program as the leader of day-to-day operations and learning. The coordinator will spend the last week of employment working directly with school counselors to ensure the broader impact of their learning and will participate in a program debriefing.

Coordinators are required to attend one paid Saturday induction ceremony on June 7th where the coordinator will help introduce the middle school youth to the structure of the program.

For questions about the program, please email Dr. Jonathan Gaines at jonathan.gaines@me.gatech.edu with the subject “GT PRIME”. To apply, please fill out this form. For your application to be complete, you must include a current resume or CV.

No prior experience with engineering design is required, but enthusiasm and experience working with youth and managing or facilitating outreach initiatives is preferred. Technical skills are also preferred such as programming or experience working with robotics systems; however, a lack of experience in these areas is not critical. We are looking for individuals that are committed to strengthening pathways to engineering by building strong relationships and engaging in design activities that promote excitement for engineering.
